Breadth inside the index was narrow: the NSE gainers feed carried 14 Nifty 50 constituents against a twenty-row cap, so exactly 14 of the 50 closed higher. The losers side was at its cap, so no exact decline count can be inferred from it. Percentages here are recomputed from the feed's own last-traded and previous-close prices and the rows re-sorted on that basis: Tech Mahindra's row carried a change field of -1.33% against a percentage field of -2.14%, and the recomputed -2.14% is correct, which moves it out of the five worst. Tata Steel and Adani Ports both round to -2.70%; Tata Steel is marginally the weaker of the two once recomputed. A midcap and smallcap mover table is again omitted — the NSE constituent endpoint has returned 404 for fifteen consecutive editions and no closing wrap carried a dated broader-market mover list with prices.

Corporate & macro desk
What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing
- Brent settled at $116.72, the highest since April — Brent crude futures settled $3.55 higher at $116.72 a barrel, up 3.14% and the highest close since 29 April, on Reuters' wire copy. WTI finished at $103.27, up $3.80. The move followed a series of Houthi attacks across Saudi Arabia, an oil spill from a tanker detected off the UAE coast at Umm Al Quwain, and a US Department of Energy authorisation of an emergency exchange of up to 400,000 barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to cover a disruption at Phillips 66's Lake Charles refinery. It was crude's fourth consecutive session of pressure on Indian equities.
- The damage was in the broader market, not the Nifty — The Nifty 50 lost 0.39% and the Sensex 0.17%, but the Nifty Midcap 100 fell 2.21%, the Smallcap 100 2.94% and the Microcap 250 2.32%. On the NSE, 3,011 stocks declined against 624 advances out of 3,724 traded, with 655 touching a 52-week low against 23 highs, per 5paisa's post-market report; the 3,011 decline count was independently carried by Money9. Geojit's Vinod Nair described a disproportionately sharp correction in mid- and small-caps relative to the Nifty, citing valuations, the unwinding of leveraged positions, crude and the AI-led global equity sell-off.
- Both FIIs and DIIs were net buyers — Foreign institutional investors bought a net Rs 887.65 crore in the cash segment (bought Rs 14,445.54 crore, sold Rs 13,557.89 crore) and domestic institutions a net Rs 3,235.36 crore (bought Rs 19,232.31 crore, sold Rs 15,996.95 crore). NSE provisional data for the session. The index fell with both institutional blocks on the buy side, which places the selling elsewhere in the register.
- The rupee slipped again, and the two wire readings differ by a paisa — PTI's copy, carried by ThePrint, put the close at 94.93 per dollar, down 12 paise from a stated previous close of 94.81. 5paisa reported 94.94 against about 94.82 the session before — the same 12-paise move from the level this series carried on 22 October. The dated majority figure is published here and the conflict named rather than averaged. The dollar index stood at 101.73, up 0.12%.
- Jio Platforms closed 22.19 times covered — The Rs 30,213-crore issue finished its three-day book at 22.19x overall by 7:35 PM IST on 23 October — QIB 70.55x, non-institutional 14.00x, retail 2.72x, employee 2.93x, on ipoji's tally. Paras Healthcare closed at 2.34x, with QIB 3.25x, non-institutional 0.69x and retail 2.10x. Allotment for both is due 26 October and listing 28 October.
- Infosys cut its FY27 guidance after the close — Infosys reported second-quarter net profit of Rs 7,823 crore, up 6.2% year on year, on revenue of Rs 49,244 crore, up 11%, and lowered its FY27 revenue growth guidance to 1-2% in constant currency from 1.5-3%. The operating margin guidance of 20-22% was left unchanged. The board declared an interim dividend of Rs 26 per share with a 3 November record date and an 11 November payout. CEO Salil Parekh cited large deals worth $5.2 billion including one above $2 billion. The announcement came after market hours on a day Business Standard counted 75 companies reporting, among them Tata Motors, JSW Steel, Adani Power, Dr Reddy's Laboratories and Shriram Finance.
- Wall Street fell after the Indian close — The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 652.82 points to 52,215.16, a fall of 1.23%, with the S&P 500 down 0.52% at 7,623.68 and the Nasdaq Composite down 0.21% at 25,955.34, on the Associated Press wire. The Russell 2000 closed at 2,775.90, down 8.13 points.

Grey market premium is an unofficial, unregulated indication published by third-party trackers. It is not exchange data, carries no guarantee of a listing price and should not be read as a forecast. Paras Healthcare's GMP cell is blank because no reading stamped inside the 23 October bidding window could be sourced: ipoji's latest Paras figure of Rs 10 is stamped 24 October, after the book had shut, and a post-close reading is not a figure about this session. A blank means not sourced, not zero. Jio Platforms' GMP of Rs 245 is 21.89% of the Rs 1,119 upper band. Both anchor books were finalised on 19 October: Jio Platforms raised Rs 8,109.85 crore from 212 institutional investors at Rs 1,119 per share, and Paras Healthcare Rs 652.50 crore from 39 institutional investors at Rs 693 per share across 94,15,584 shares. Four further mainboard issues were listed by NSE as forthcoming rather than open during this session and so carry no row: EAAA India Alternatives (opens 26 October), SFC Environmental Technologies and BLS Polymers (27 October) and M. K. Sons Fine Jewels (28 October).

Commodities, currency & global
Bullion from bullions.co.in as at 23 Oct 2026, 17:40 IST, read via StartupTalky — Indian retail reference rates, which vary by city and between aggregators; CMOTS put 24K at Rs 1,42,480 for the same day, 0.45% below. No day-on-day change is shown for any of the three metals: the source states 24K down Rs 500 and silver down Rs 4,330, but neither reconciles against the same source's reading in the previous edition, so no change figure is published rather than one we cannot stand behind. Brent is the 23 October futures settlement on the Reuters wire, not an intraday quote. The three US indices are the 23 October close — the same calendar day as the Indian session, because Wall Street shuts at about 02:00 IST.
What we are watching next session
- Kotak Mahindra Bank, IDFC First Bank and AU Small Finance Bank all report on 24 October, into a session in which the Nifty Bank fell 1.16% and the PSU Bank index 2.26%. Deposit-cost and margin commentary will be read more closely than the headline numbers.
- 27 October is the heaviest results day in the window: Larsen & Toubro, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Steel, Bajaj Auto, Cipla, SBI Life, Tata Capital and Steel Authority of India all report, and Tata Capital's agenda includes an expansion of its Medium Term Note programme.
- Jio Platforms finished its book at 22.19x with retail at 2.72x. Allotment is due 26 October and listing 28 October, and a Rs 30,213-crore debut will set the tone for the four mainboard issues opening between 26 and 28 October.
- Crude is still the organising fact. Brent's $116.72 settlement is the highest since 29 April and the fourth straight session in which it has pressured Indian equities; the 2–04 December Monetary Policy Committee meeting is the next scheduled answer on the input-cost question.
- The mid- and small-cap correction is now the story rather than the Nifty. With the Smallcap 100 down 2.94% in a session the Nifty lost 0.39%, and 655 stocks at 52-week lows, issuer disclosure quality in the broader market matters more than it did a week ago. The Index of Industrial Production lands on 28 October.
