Breadth within the index was narrow: the NSE gainers feed carried 14 Nifty 50 constituents against a twenty-row cap, so exactly 14 of the 50 closed higher. The losers side was at its cap, so no exact decline count can be inferred from it. Market-wide breadth readings disagreed materially between sources and are not published. A midcap and smallcap mover table is again omitted: the NSE constituent endpoint has returned 404 for fourteen consecutive editions and no closing wrap carried a dated broader-market mover list with prices.

Corporate & macro desk

What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing

  • Brent settled above $113, a five-month high — Brent futures settled $4.35 higher at $113.17 a barrel, up 4.00%, after further Houthi attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure and the United States ordering some diplomatic personnel out of Saudi Arabia. WTI finished at $99.47, up $2.32. Crude was the session's organising fact: the Sensex and Nifty fell for a third straight day.
  • FIIs sold, DIIs bought — Foreign institutional investors were net sellers of Rs 3,458.70 crore in the cash segment (bought Rs 13,627.54 crore, sold Rs 17,086.24 crore), while domestic institutions took the other side with a net Rs 2,891.32 crore (bought Rs 16,242.83 crore, sold Rs 13,351.51 crore). NSE provisional data for the session.
  • The rupee snapped an eight-session winning streak — The rupee weakened to 94.82 per dollar, down 44 paise, on PTI's wire copy; Business Standard reported the close at 94.83 against a stated previous close of 94.47. It had touched 94.33 intraday on Jio IPO-linked inflows before crude and dollar demand took it back. The 10-year government bond yield settled at 7.46%.
  • RBI minutes left the door open to more tightening — Minutes of the October Monetary Policy Committee meeting, released on 21 October, showed members open to a further rate increase if inflation broadens. The RBI projects retail inflation at 6% in Q3 FY27 and 5.7% in Q4, and has raised its full-year forecast to 5.2% from 5%. Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta argued for early action on the pass-through of input costs.
  • Jio Platforms was 5.51x covered on day two — The Rs 30,213-crore issue reached 5.51x overall by 6:57 PM IST on 22 October — QIB 13.14x, non-institutional 5.91x, retail 1.53x, employee 2.09x. Paras Healthcare, open on the same dates, stood at 0.36x. Both books close on 23 October.
  • A long list of 52-week lows — Lupin, SRF, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Maruti Suzuki and NTPC each touched a 52-week low during the session, per Business Standard's closing report. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles also finished among the Nifty 50's five worst performers.
  • Wall Street diverged after the Indian close — The Dow edged up 11.89 points (+0.02%) while the S&P 500 fell 1.21% and the Nasdaq Composite 2.60%, the decline led by megacap technology as doubts over AI spending resurfaced and Meta's plan to issue new non-voting stock weighed on sentiment. Treasury yields fell, lifting rate-sensitive sectors and dividend payers.

Grey market premium is an unofficial, unregulated indication published by third-party trackers. It is not exchange data, carries no guarantee of a listing price and should not be read as a forecast. GMP and subscription both move through the bidding window, which is why each figure here carries its own stamped time. ipoji's live board showed Paras Healthcare at Rs 12 later on 22 October against the Rs 25 stamped that morning; the morning figure is the one tabled, with its time, rather than blending the two. Jio Platforms' anchor allocation was not disclosed on any source reached this morning, so that cell is blank — a blank means not sourced, not zero. Paras Healthcare's anchor book was finalised on 19 October: Rs 652.50 crore from 39 institutions at Rs 693 per share.

What we are watching next session

  • Final day to bid on Jio Platforms and Paras Healthcare, 23 October. The Rs 30,213-crore Jio book was 5.51x covered at the end of day two with retail at 1.53x, and allotment follows on 26 October.
  • Kotak Mahindra Bank, IDFC First Bank and AU Small Finance Bank report on 24 October into a 10-year government bond at 7.46%. Margin and deposit-cost commentary will be read more closely than the headline numbers.
  • Tech Mahindra, ICICI Lombard, HDB Financial Services, Oberoi Realty, 360 ONE WAM, IRFC, LTM and MODISON all go ex-dividend on 23 October — a dense day for registrar and shareholder-query volume.
  • Crude is the variable that matters now. A Brent settlement above $113 reopens the input-cost question the RBI minutes left on the table, and the 2–4 December MPC is the next scheduled answer.
  • The Index of Industrial Production on 28 October is the next domestic data point, and it lands the same day Jio Platforms and Paras Healthcare are due to list.
