Only 16 of the 50 Nifty constituents closed higher — the exchange's gainers list ran to 16 rows against its 20-row cap, so that count is exact. The losers list was at its cap, so no equivalent decline count can be taken from it. Midcap and smallcap mover tables are again omitted: the NSE constituent endpoint that supplied them has returned 404 on every attempt since September and no dated substitute was found for this session.

What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing

• Brent back above $110 and that, not earnings, set the tone — Brent was quoted at $110.85 a barrel, up $2.06 or 1.89%, on Middle East shipping risk — Kpler counted at least 18 vessel attacks in the region over a fortnight, and Yemen's Houthis claimed strikes on a Saudi Aramco site at Yanbu and the Shaybah oilfield — alongside an API-reported 4.9 million-barrel draw in US crude stocks. Indices that had been up about 1% in early trade gave the gains back, the Nifty closing below its 20-day EMA.
• IT was the whole of the bid: index up 2.88%, all ten constituents higher — The Nifty IT index added about Rs 77,000 crore of market value, with Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra and TCS the four largest Nifty 50 gainers. Kotak Neo's Shrikant Chouhan attributed the buying to AI-driven revenue growth in the July–September results; Stoxbox's Bhavya Shah described rotation into defensive technology and a breakout above the 200-day moving average.
• Banks and finance lost about Rs 81,000 crore as the 10-year yield hit 7.45% — Nifty Bank fell 0.92% to 54,976.90 and Nifty Private Bank 1.05%, with the 10-year government bond yield touching a near four-year high of 7.45%. Axis Bank fell 2.1% and HDFC Bank 0.7%; ICICI Bank, up 0.3%, was the only private-bank gainer. State Bank of India fell 1.1% and was the second-largest drag on the Nifty as state-run banks gave back part of Monday's gains.
• Jio Platforms' Rs 30,213-crore issue opened and was covered within two hours — India's largest IPO opened at a Rs 1,065–1,119 band and closed day one at 3.04 times as at 5:55 PM IST, with the institutional book excluding anchors at 9.04 times, the non-institutional portion at 1.61 times and retail at 0.73 times. Paras Healthcare, open on the same dates, stood at 0.15 times.
• The rupee took the other side of the oil story and rose 48 paise — The rupee settled at 94.43 to the dollar, a six-week high, on foreign inflows tied to the Jio Platforms issue and RBI support — a gain of 48 paise against the 94.91 close of the previous session, achieved despite the crude move and a weak equity tape.
• FIIs and DIIs were both net buyers of cash equities — Foreign institutions bought Rs 17,003.90 crore and sold Rs 15,981.58 crore for a net purchase of Rs 1,022.32 crore; domestic institutions bought Rs 14,931.57 crore against Rs 13,317.25 crore of sales, a net Rs 1,614.32 crore. Both sides buying on a down session is an unusual combination and sits awkwardly with the FII-selling narrative several closing wraps carried.
• Trade-deal hopes lifted the open and did not hold — US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's comment that an India–US trade agreement could come 'within weeks rather than months' supported the early rally. Breadth was narrow by the close: only 16 of the 50 Nifty constituents finished higher, while the Midcap 100 fell 1.58% and the Smallcap 100 2.37%.

Brent is a futures quote taken during the Indian session (10:48 GMT); a second reading had December delivery at $110.77 at 15:41 IST. Gold is Business Today's Delhi retail series, continuing the series used in prior editions, with the change measured against 19 October. Silver is bullions.co.in's national 999 rate via StartupTalky with that source's own day-on-day change; Business Today's Delhi silver row of Rs 2,30,000 was excluded as an outlier, sitting about 9% above two independent readings including MCX. Retail bullion rates vary by city and dealer.
