Breadth within the index was unusually narrow: the gainers side of the NSE feed returned only nine rows against its twenty-row cap, so exactly nine of the fifty Nifty constituents closed higher. The losers side was at its cap, so no full decline count can be inferred, and the two closing wraps that published market-wide breadth disagreed materially with one another, so no market-wide advance/decline figure is carried. Every row's change and percentage fields reconciled against its own last and previous price this session. Midcap and smallcap mover tables remain omitted: the NSE constituent endpoint that supplied them has been returning errors since late September and no closing wrap carried a dated broader-market mover list.

Corporate & macro desk

What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing

  • Private lenders drove the fall, and the results were the reason — Nifty Private Bank closed 1.85% lower and Nifty Financial Services 1.58% lower, the two weakest sectoral readings of the session. Axis Bank fell 4.19% to Rs 1,236.00, the largest decline in the Nifty 50; HDFC Bank fell 2.31% to Rs 712.00 and ICICI Bank about 1.1%. All three had reported September-quarter results on Saturday 17 October, outside a trading session, so Monday was the market's first opportunity to respond.
  • Axis Bank: profit up 39.4%, asset quality better, stock down 4.19% — Consolidated net profit for Q2 FY27 rose about 39.4% year on year to Rs 7,704.67 crore from Rs 5,527.85 crore, with standalone net profit at Rs 7,003.28 crore. Gross NPAs improved to 1.16% of gross advances from 1.46% a year earlier and net NPAs to 0.35%, and consolidated provisions fell to Rs 1,757.46 crore from Rs 3,642.55 crore. Reports attributed the share-price reaction to higher operating costs and weaker other income rather than to the headline profit.
  • ICICI Bank: standalone profit up 20.1%, but margin compressed — Standalone net profit was Rs 14,843 crore for Q2 FY27, up 20.1% year on year, with net interest income of Rs 25,339 crore, up 17.7%. Consolidated net profit including subsidiaries was Rs 16,333 crore. Net interest margin came in at 4.18% against 4.36% in the June quarter and 4.30% a year earlier. Gross NPAs were 1.20% against 1.58% a year earlier.
  • HDFC Bank: 4.7% profit growth on a collapse in treasury gains — Standalone net profit was Rs 19,510 crore, up 4.7% year on year, with net interest income of Rs 34,620 crore, up 9.7%. Treasury trading gains fell to roughly Rs 780 crore from about Rs 2,390 crore, and the bank reported that profit excluding treasury trading gains grew approximately 12.6%. Gross NPAs improved to 1.11% and net interest margin on interest-earning assets was 3.32%.
  • PSU banks were the only sector in the green — Nifty PSU Bank closed 2.46% higher at 8,294.10, the single advancing sectoral index. Union Bank of India rose 5.25% to Rs 180.70 and Punjab National Bank 4.82% to Rs 121.90, both after September-quarter results; PNB's net profit was reported up about 13% year on year and Union Bank's up 30.32%.
  • YES Bank fell on the AT-1 ruling — The stock closed 3.54% lower at Rs 16.88 as investors weighed stronger-than-expected earnings against the Supreme Court having set aside the 2020 write-off of Rs 8,415 crore of AT-1 bonds. The bank has indicated that reinstating those instruments implies a hit of roughly 250 basis points to its CET1 ratio on a pro forma basis.
  • Brent above $108 and a firmer bond yield — Brent was quoted at $108.58 a barrel in futures trade during the Indian session, down 1.17% on the day but holding above $108 after Washington waived key sanctions and tariffs on Russian fuel exports. The benchmark 10-year government security yield rose to 7.403% from 7.382%, and the dollar index stood at 101.93.

Grey market premium is an unofficial, unregulated and entirely indicative figure quoted by private dealers. It is not a price, not an exchange quote and carries no regulatory standing; it can move sharply within a single day and should not be relied on. The whole GMP column is taken from one tracker rather than blended across sites, and the percentage is the premium against the upper end of each price band. A blank cell means the figure was not sourced this morning, not that it is zero: no source stated anchor-investor participation for any of these issues, so that column is empty throughout. Allotment and listing dates are the trackers' expected dates. Two mainboard issues open on Wednesday 21 October and close on 23 October - Jio Platforms, at a band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 for 27 crore shares, and Paras Healthcare at Rs 660 to Rs 693 - and are not given rows here because they were not open during the session. No SME or debt issue was open during the session.

Commodities, currency & global

US index cards are Monday 19 October's own closes - Wall Street shut at about 01:30 IST on 20 October, after the Indian session covered here, so the global cards and the Indian tape are the same calendar day. Brent is the level quoted in futures trade during the Indian session, not a settlement; three readings spanned $108.55 to $108.70. Bullion figures are retail reference rates for Delhi as at 10:44 IST on 19 October (Business Today), the same source series as the previous edition, so the day-on-day changes are like-for-like; retail quotes vary by city and by aggregator. The rupee close was reported two ways by the same wire: 94.91, down 2 paise, in a filing that quotes Monday's FII figure of Rs 1,148.64 crore and matches the exchange data, and 94.92, down 3 paise, in an earlier filing that labels itself provisional. The later filing is carried here; both agree the previous close was 94.89.

What we are watching next session

  • Wednesday 21 October is the next session - Tuesday is closed for Dussehra. Two mainboard IPOs open that morning and close on 23 October: Jio Platforms at a band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 for 27 crore shares, and Paras Healthcare at Rs 660 to Rs 693.
  • Allotment for the four issues that closed on Monday falls on 21 October, with listing on 23 October. Final-day demand was very uneven: Tonbo Imaging at 135.29 times against Zetwerk at 3.05 times.
  • 23 October is the heaviest results day of the fortnight: Infosys (with a dividend item), Tata Motors, JSW Steel, Dr Reddy's, IndusInd Bank, BPCL, Adani Power and Shriram Finance (results, dividend and fund-raising) all meet on the same date.
  • Wall Street split on Monday after the Indian close - Nasdaq up 1.11% and the S&P 500 up 0.41% as AI and technology names recovered part of last week's fall, while the Dow slipped 0.07%. India opens Wednesday against a mixed rather than a uniformly weak handover.
  • Brent at $108.58 and the 10-year government security yield at 7.403% are the two prices for issuers with imported input costs or floating-rate debt to frame in their results commentary. IndusInd Bank reports on 23 October and Kotak Mahindra Bank and AU Small Finance Bank on 24 October, so the banking read-across continues all week.
