Both sides of the NSE movers feed returned the full 20-row cap this session, so no Nifty 50 advance/decline count can be inferred from it, and no closing wrap published a market-wide breadth figure. HCL Tech is not shown: the feed's own change and percentage fields disagreed for that symbol, and its price history supports the lower reading, which would place it outside the top five. Midcap and smallcap mover tables remain omitted - the NSE constituent endpoint that supplied them has been returning errors since late September and no closing wrap carried a dated broader-market mover list.

What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing

• IT led the session, and led it by a distance — Nifty IT closed 3.92% higher at 31,924.10, its fourth straight advance and far ahead of every other sector. Angel One attributed the move to September-quarter results from Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Infosys and TCS that beat expectations on deal wins and volume growth, a global rotation out of capital-intensive chipmakers into Indian IT services, and easing fears of AI disruption, with HCLTech having raised its full-year growth guidance.
• Tech Mahindra was the best Nifty 50 performer — The stock closed at Rs 1,790.00, up 8.48% on the NSE, the largest gain in the index. TCS (+4.89%), Infosys (+4.61%) and Bharti Airtel (+2.75%) followed.
• Federal Bank posted a record quarter — Q2 net profit rose 45.10% year on year to Rs 1,386 crore, a record for the bank. The stock rose 2.9% to Rs 344.80 on the NSE.
• Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals profit up 68% — Q2 profit after tax rose 68% to Rs 119.34 crore. The stock gained as much as 2.4% to Rs 220.65 during the session.
• Shoppers Stop returned to profit — The retailer reported a Q2 net profit of Rs 3.1 crore against a loss of Rs 20.11 crore in the same quarter a year earlier.
• YES Bank flagged a capital hit from the AT-1 reinstatement — Following the Supreme Court setting aside the write-off, reinstating Rs 8,415 crore of AT-1 bonds implies a hit of roughly 250 basis points to the bank's CET1 ratio on a pro forma basis.
• Institutional roles reversed — FIIs were net buyers of Rs 1,165.92 crore in the cash segment while DIIs were net sellers of Rs 3,661.28 crore - the mirror image of Thursday, when FIIs sold Rs 5,285.37 crore. The rupee rose for a sixth consecutive session.

US index cards are Friday 16 October's own closes - Wall Street shut at about 01:30 IST on 17 October, after the Indian session being covered here, so for once the global cards and the Indian tape are the same calendar day. Brent is the level quoted in futures trade during the Indian session, not a settlement. Bullion figures are retail reference rates for Delhi as at 09:58 IST on 16 October (Business Today); retail quotes vary by city and by aggregator, and a day-on-day change could not be sourced on a like-for-like basis. The rupee close is disputed: a later PTI filing carried 94.89, up 10 paise, while an earlier provisional PTI filing put it at 94.92, up 7 paise. Both agree the previous close was 94.99.
