Breadth was unusually one-sided: NSE's closing variations feed listed only four declining Nifty 50 names, shown here in full. No closing advance/decline count was published by the wraps, so none is stated. Midcap and smallcap mover tables are omitted — the NSE constituent endpoint that fed them has been unavailable since late September and no wrap carried a dated broader-market mover list for this session.

What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing
- Sitharaman leaves LTCG and STT on the table, and the tape re-rated — Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi at about 2:54 PM, the Finance Minister said it was not the right moment to say what Budget 2027 would consider, that the government would hear market participants' views on securities taxation, and that healthy debate on it should be encouraged. No proposal was announced. The Sensex added 1,109.10 points from there to close at 73,033.78.
- HCL Tech's Q2 beat put Nifty IT up 5.22%, its biggest single-day gain since May 2025 — September-quarter net profit rose 21.2% year on year, ahead of expectations, and drew buyers back to a sector that had been pressured by AI-disruption and slowing-growth concerns. HCLTECH closed up 8.42% at Rs 1,326, TCS up 6.79% at Rs 2,269.30, Tech Mahindra up 4.93% and Infosys up 4.13%.
- NPCI defers the 0.40% UPI merchant discount rate until after Diwali — The UPI and Services Steering Committee moved implementation on select person-to-merchant transactions from 15 October to a date to be notified immediately after Diwali. The charge would apply to merchant transactions above Rs 2,000, capped at Rs 300, with a flat Rs 5 on bill payments, utilities, education and fuel. Paytm, Pine Labs and MobiKwik fell as much as 7% intraday before recovering, the deferral being shorter than the January date the market had feared.
- Cable and wire makers fell up to 5% — Polycab India, KEI Industries, R R Kabel and Quadrant Future were among the day's notable decliners, trading about 24% below the 52-week highs they touched last month.
- The rupee gained 42 paise to 95.36 as the RBI's measures and a softer dollar helped — PTI reported a close of 95.36 against 95.78, with an intraday range of 94.96 to 95.53. The dollar index was down 0.26% at 102.32 and Brent was quoted 1.93% lower.
- Three large interim dividends go ex this week — TCS (Rs 12 per share) and Vedanta (Rs 5) go ex-dividend on 14 October, and HCL Technologies (Rs 12) on 16 October. Hindustan Composites' Rs 21 special dividend and Canara Robeco AMC's Rs 2 interim also go ex on 16 October.
- Wholesale inflation for September lands on 14 October — The Office of the Economic Adviser's release calendar puts the September WPI index on 14 October — the first wholesale print to follow the September CPI reading.

Grey market premium is an unofficial, unregulated indicator published by private trackers. It is not an exchange price, carries no settlement guarantee and is not a forecast of the listing price. A blank cell means not sourced, not zero — the issue size is left blank because NSE's filed share count (1,84,20,492) does not reconcile with the 2,62,84,500 shares and Rs 712.31 crore the GMP tracker carries, and a disputed figure is worse than none. Fusion CX was listed Active but opens 14 October, so it gets no row.
Commodities, currency & global
Bullion is the national India Bullion Rates reference as at 15:00 IST, not a city retail rate — Delhi and Mumbai jewellers' quotes ran about 1% higher, and the MCX December contract settled near Rs 1,49,533. US indices are the 13 October close, the same calendar day as the Indian session, Wall Street having closed at about 02:00 IST.
What we are watching next session
- September WPI at 14 October — the first wholesale print after the September CPI reading, and the one that tells issuers whether input-cost commentary in Q2 calls still holds.
- TCS (Rs 12) and Vedanta (Rs 5) go ex-dividend on 14 October; HCL Technologies (Rs 12), Hindustan Composites (Rs 21 special) and Canara Robeco AMC (Rs 2) on 16 October.
- The IPO window widens: Fusion CX (Rs 275–289) opens 14 October, HD Fire Protect's final bidding day is 15 October, and Sahajanand Medical Technologies (Rs 327–344), Bonfiglioli Transmissions (Rs 558–586), Zetwerk Manufacturing (Rs 143–151) and Tonbo Imaging (Rs 665–700) all open 15 October.
- Results density steps up — Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Nestlé India, HDFC Life, Jio Financial and Polycab on 15 October; DLF, PNB and Federal Bank on 16 October; HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank on 17 October.
- Whether the budget-expectation bid holds. The Finance Minister named no proposal on LTCG or STT, so the re-rating rests on an invitation to debate rather than on anything filed.
