Corporate & macro desk

What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing

  • A rebound, not a reversal — the week's driver was the RBI — The Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate 25 basis points to 5.50% on 7 October, unanimously on the rate and 4-2 on shifting the stance to calibrated tightening. Benchmarks fell through 6-8 October, the Nifty 50 ending 8 October at 22,231.80 after a 371-point drop, before Friday's recovery. The RBI projects FY27 GDP at 7.1% and CPI at 5.2%, with inflation peaking near 6.0% in the October-December quarter.
  • IT carried the session as Q2 reporting began — Nifty IT rose 3.02%, the best of the sectoral indices, with TCS closing 3.85% higher at Rs 2,156.00, HCL Technologies 3.38% at Rs 1,216.70 and Infosys 2.65% at Rs 1,023.40. Business Standard attributed the move to a strong start to the Q2 earnings season and to expectations around AI-led revenue.
  • Crude eased and that did much of the work — Brent's December contract was quoted around $103.01 a barrel during the Indian session, after topping $104 on 8 October. Reports cited indications that US military action against Iran is unlikely before the November midterms. India VIX fell 6.02% to 14.36.
  • Breadth was about as wide as it gets — Forty-six of the fifty Nifty constituents advanced, four declined and none were unchanged. Nifty Midcap 100 added 1.56% and Nifty Smallcap 100 0.54%; only Nifty Oil & Gas, down 0.09%, closed lower among the sectoral indices.
  • Foreign selling has not stopped — FIIs were net sellers of Rs 3,568.90 crore in the cash segment on Friday, against DII buying of Rs 4,743.26 crore. Kotak Securities cited NSDL fortnightly data showing a net foreign outflow of about Rs 35,861 crore for the month to date.
  • Single-stock news on the desk — Hexaware Technologies was reported higher on a tie-up with Anthropic and Thermax on talk of a stake sale in its renewable energy arm, while NSDL touched a new low. Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers and Poonawalla Fincorp were among the companies scheduled to report on the day.

What we are watching next session

  • CPI for September, released on Monday 12 October — the first inflation print since the RBI's 25 bp hike and its projection that inflation peaks near 6.0% this quarter.
  • Q2 reporting proper: ICICI Prudential Life and Tata Elxsi on 13 October; BHEL, Canara Bank and Tata Technologies on 14 October; Nestle India, Wipro and Tech Mahindra on 15 October; HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank on 17 October.
  • Ex-dates: Ola Electric's 2:25 rights on 13 October, TCS's Rs 12 and Vedanta's Rs 5 interim dividends on 14 October, and Bansal Wire's Rs 5-to-Re 1 split on 16 October.
  • The IPO window reopens on 13 October after a fortnight's gap — HD Fire Protect on the mainboard and Ravita Engineering Services and Vaibhav Vyapaar on the SME board, all 13–15 October per NSE filings.
  • Whether foreign selling abates: FIIs have been net sellers through the week, and the NSDL month-to-date outflow cited at about Rs 35,861 crore is the number to watch against domestic buying.
