Market Pulse — 01 October 2026

A fourth straight decline with a single clear author: September vehicle sales. Nifty Auto fell 3.46% as Bajaj Auto lost 7.62% and Maruti 4.86%, while an expanded Infosys mandate at ABN AMRO lifted Nifty IT 2.17%. FIIs sold Rs 9,484 crore of cash equity and the rupee hit a record 96.31.

Corporate & macro desk

What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing

  • September GST receipts up 14.7% to Rs 2.04 lakh crore — Gross collections rose from Rs 1.77 lakh crore a year earlier. Domestic revenue was Rs 1.38 lakh crore, up 10.1%, while import-linked GST jumped 25.9% to Rs 65,525 crore. Net of refunds, which fell 3% to Rs 27,001 crore, collections were Rs 1.77 lakh crore, up 18.1%. Released on the session date.
  • September vehicle sales set the tape against the auto pack — Bajaj Auto's two-wheeler sales fell 12% year on year to 239,771 units and the stock ended 7.62% lower. Maruti Suzuki reported total sales up 24.43% to 236,013 units and still closed down 4.86%; Mahindra & Mahindra grew 15% to 114,874 vehicles and Tata Motors' passenger-vehicle sales rose 15% to 70,210. Eicher's above-350cc volumes fell 26%. Nifty Auto closed 3.46% lower with Brent near $99 a barrel compounding the read.
  • Infosys expands ABN AMRO mandate, carrying Nifty IT — The extended collaboration puts Infosys Topaz at the centre of an enterprise-wide AI programme across the Dutch bank's IT stack, spanning application development, testing, support and AI-enabled operations. Infosys closed 4.11% higher and Nifty IT rose 2.17%, the only large sectoral index to finish green.
  • IRFC receives Rs 397 crore GST show-cause notice — Bihar tax authorities issued the notice to Indian Railway Finance Corporation. A show-cause notice seeks an explanation and is not a final determination of liability — a distinction worth making explicitly in the disclosure itself.
  • Jio Financial and Allianz each put Rs 320.05 crore into insurance JV — Jio Financial Services and Allianz Europe B.V. subscribed 32,00,50,000 shares each at par in Jio Allianz General Insurance through a rights issue, funding operations at the new venture.
  • Moneyview and A-One Steels list — Both debuted on the NSE and BSE. Moneyview's issue had been subscribed roughly 98 times and A-One Steels India about 11.6 times.
  • Tech Mahindra board to take up a bonus alongside Q2 — The 15 October meeting carries financial results, an interim dividend and consideration of a bonus issue on one agenda. Elsewhere, NCC won orders worth Rs 500.22 crore, Apollo Tyres allotted Rs 500 crore of NCDs on private placement, YES Bank received a Rs 363 crore tax refund, and Bata India appointed Sanjay Rao as MD and CEO.

Grey-market premium is an unofficial, unregulated indication quoted by private dealers. It is not an exchange price, carries no settlement and no regulatory oversight, and should not be read as a guide to listing price. The whole GMP column is taken from a single stamped source; figures from different trackers diverge materially on the same issue at the same moment and are never blended here. A blank cell means the figure could not be sourced for this session — it does not mean zero. Also open during the session but not tabled for want of sourced terms: Paramount Syntex and TNA Solutions (both 30 Sep to 06 Oct), plus Dove Soft, SJP Ultrasonics and Sollfege Smart Electronics on the SME boards. R.K. Fashion Accessories (05 to 07 Oct) opened after the session.

Bullion is the national benchmark quoted by bullions.co.in at 5:40 PM IST on 01 October; retail rates vary by city, state taxes, making charges and GST, and a second aggregator carried silver near Rs 2.40 lakh the same day — a spread wide enough to be worth stating. Brent is the level during the Indian session, not a later US-hours print. The three US index cards are the Thursday 01 October close — the same calendar day as the Indian session, since Wall Street shuts at about 2:00 AM IST.

What we are watching next session

  • The RBI resolution on 07 October, into a rupee at a record 96.31 and Brent back near $100 — the two variables that have driven the last four sessions.
  • TCS on 08 October opens the Q2 reporting season, with HCL Tech on the 12th and the three large private banks on the 17th. IR calendars should already be locked.
  • Whether DII absorption holds: FIIs have now sold more than Rs 9,400 crore of cash equity on each of the last two sessions and domestic institutions have taken the other side both times.
  • Auto volume disclosure quality. Maruti grew total sales 24% and still fell 4.86% — a reminder that a headline volume number without mix, realisation and channel-inventory context will be filled in by someone else.
  • Two mainboard IPOs close on 05 October with books under 1x at the end of day two, and Mold-Tek Packaging's 1:1 bonus goes ex on the 9th.
