Market Pulse — 30 September 2026

A flat Sensex masked a split tape on the last day of September: banks, realty and media carried the index while a Supreme Court broadside on hospital drug margins took healthcare down 2.57% and pharma 1.84%. Foreign investors sold another Rs 10,148 crore in cash, a second consecutive session above Rs 9,900 crore, and domestic institutions absorbed all of it.

Corporate & macro desk

What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing

  • Supreme Court questions hospital drug margins; healthcare is the day's worst sector — A Supreme Court bench criticised mark-ups on medicines at corporate hospitals, citing a cancer drug supplied to retailers at Rs 2,700 against an MRP of Rs 27,000, and described the practice as "carnage, plain and simple". The bench floated a uniform 16% margin across drugs and questioned hospitals requiring patients to buy from in-house pharmacies. Nifty Healthcare fell 2.57% and Nifty Pharma 1.84%; Apollo Hospitals closed 5.70% lower and Max Healthcare 5.33% lower, with Yatharth, KIMS and Fortis also down between roughly 4.8% and 5.9%.
  • Prestige Estates hospitality arm draws Rs 3,000 crore from CPPIB — Prestige Estates Projects rose about 5% after its hospitality subsidiary secured a Rs 3,000 crore investment from the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board for a roughly 27% stake. Nifty Realty gained 1.62%, with Prestige, Brigade Enterprises and DLF leading the index.
  • A second straight session of heavy foreign selling — FIIs sold a net Rs 10,148.41 crore in the cash segment, following Rs 9,980 crore on 29 September. Domestic institutions bought a net Rs 11,271.73 crore, more than absorbing the outflow. September's foreign outflow totalled roughly $2.7 billion, taking the year-to-date figure to about $26.75 billion.
  • Sun TV extends an eight-session run — Sun TV Network closed 9.3% higher in its eighth consecutive session of gains, the single largest contributor to Nifty Media's 2.74% rise — the day's strongest sector.
  • US August PCE came in above target, keeping global yields firm — The US personal consumption expenditures price index rose 0.3% in August and 3.4% from a year earlier, with the core measure at 3.0%. Elevated global yields and a firm dollar index at 101.44 remained the backdrop for foreign selling in Indian cash equities.
  • Rupee held just inside 96 after an intraday breach — The rupee settled at 95.95 against the dollar, two paise stronger, after opening at 96.03 and touching 96.15 intraday. Dealers attributed the recovery to suspected central-bank support and softer oil.
  • TCS opens the Q2 reporting season on 8 October — Tata Consultancy Services will consider Q2 results and a second interim dividend on 8 October, the first large-cap print of the season. HCL Technologies follows on 12 October and Axis Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank all report on 17 October.

Grey market premium (GMP) is an unofficial, unregulated indication quoted by private dealers. It is not an exchange price, carries no settlement guarantee and can move sharply within a single session; it is reproduced here only as market colour and should not be read as a valuation. A blank cell means the figure could not be sourced for this session, not that it is zero — lot sizes, basis-of-allotment and listing dates, anchor-book status and the subscription multiples for Shah Investor's Home and the two issues that opened on 30 September were not obtainable. Srit India and Shah Investor's Home closed on 30 September; Nityas Gems and Vishal Nirmiti bid to 5 October. Price bands and shares offered are from NSE's own filings. Fourteen SME issues were also open during the session, of which four — Black Opal Consultants, Green Asia Impex, Papadmalji Agro Foods and Vans Electroengineerings — close on 1 October; NSE's SME feed returned no data, so they are not tabled.

What we are watching next session

  • Markets are closed on Friday 2 October for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, so Thursday 1 October is the only session between Wednesday's close and 5 October — a short window for any issuer planning a disclosure this week.
  • Whether the Supreme Court's remarks on hospital pharmacy mark-ups harden into a directive. Hospital and diagnostics IR desks should expect questions on pharmacy revenue mix and margin sensitivity, and should have a consistent, board-approved line ready rather than improvising stock-by-stock.
  • The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee meets 5–7 October with the resolution due on the 7th — the first scheduled macro event of the new quarter and the main domestic input into rate-sensitive sectors.
  • Two consecutive sessions of roughly Rs 9,980 crore and Rs 10,148 crore of FII cash selling, fully absorbed by domestic institutions both times. The composition of the register, not the index level, is what is changing.
  • Q2 reporting opens with TCS on 8 October, HCL Technologies on the 12th and Axis Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank together on the 17th. Ex-dates cluster early in the month, with R Systems, Indraprastha Gas and the Natco Pharma rights issue all going ex on 1 October.
