The Nifty 50 rose 75.80 points to 23,346.40 while the Sensex slipped 19.63 points to 74,294.96, as a Tata Sons governance dispute pulled TCS down 3.88%. What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing

  • Tata Sons dispute hits the group's listed companies — Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata described N Chandrasekaran's reappointment as Tata Sons chairman as "illegal" at Thursday's board meeting. TCS fell 3.9% to ₹2,105, shedding ₹30,754 crore of market value, Tata Chemicals 11% to ₹693.25, Tata Technologies 4.8% and Tata Elxsi 3.4%. Group companies lost nearly ₹39,000 crore of market value on the day (Business Standard).
  • Broader market carries the tape — The Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 1.74% to 19,875.70, the Midcap 100 1.24% to 62,191.25 and the Microcap 250 1.61%, well ahead of the benchmarks. Metal (+1.51%), media (+1.34%), realty (+1.19%) and chemicals (+1.17%) led; IT (−1.03%) was the only sector down by more than half a percent.
  • FIIs turn net buyers for the first time in four sessions — FIIs bought a net ₹599.54 crore in the cash segment after selling on 15, 16 and 17 September, on unusually heavy gross turnover of ₹38,461.63 crore bought and ₹37,862.09 crore sold. DIIs bought a net ₹1,019.69 crore.
  • Three mainboard books close heavily oversubscribed — Jindal Supreme (India) closed at 177.03 times, SS Retail at 107.41 times with its QIB portion at 214.22 times, and Hero Motors at 7.01 times (IPO Watch, 18 September). All three are scheduled to list on 23 September. The National Stock Exchange's own issue was 1.04 times subscribed after its second day.
  • Adani Ports leads the Nifty — Adani Ports rose 4.93% to ₹1,824 and Adani Enterprises 3.31% to ₹3,020, with Bharti Airtel up 3.12% and HDFC Bank 2.52%. In the midcap index, Adani Total Gas gained 12.03%.
  • Rupee flat, crude eases — The rupee closed unchanged at 95.89 to the dollar as Brent eased 0.93% to $103.85 a barrel (PTI). Overnight, the US 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.00%; the Dow slipped 95.40 points while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq edged higher.
