Corporate & macro desk

What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing

  • Brent through $100 for the first time since July — The November contract settled $2.77 higher at $100.69 a barrel, up 2.83%, on escalating US-Iran tension and supply-disruption risk. For an economy that imports the overwhelming majority of its crude, that remains the single most consequential price on the screen.
  • Rupee breaks 95, RBI seen intervening — The rupee touched 95.2250 to the dollar intraday and closed at 95.1175. Traders said the Reserve Bank sold dollars and used forex swaps to steady it, attributing the weakness to oil-driven and outflow-driven demand.
  • IT carried the decline — Nifty IT fell 969.50 points to 28,913.95, down 3.24% and the worst of the sectoral indices, with Infosys off 4.34%, HCL Technologies 3.70%, Tech Mahindra 3.27% and Wipro 2.62%. Coforge, Mphasis and Persistent Systems were also among the weaker large-cap technology names.
  • Metals the only sector to close higher — Nifty Metal rose 1.79% to 13,391.40, the single gainer among the NSE sectoral indices, with Tata Steel up 2.50% and Coal India 2.56%. Jindal Stainless gained over 6% and Graphite India 14.81% in the broader market.
  • Foreign selling steps up, domestic money more than covers it — FIIs were net sellers of ₹582.99 crore (bought ₹16,392.90 crore, sold ₹16,975.89 crore) and DIIs net buyers of ₹1,509.04 crore (bought ₹18,130.76 crore, sold ₹16,621.72 crore). Foreign selling was roughly five times the ₹123.19 crore of 8 September, but gross turnover on both sides rose about 40%.
  • Breadth negative, broader market resilient — The BSE recorded 1,877 advances against 2,498 declines with 234 unchanged. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 0.51%, the Smallcap 100 0.48% and the Microcap 250 just 0.15% — the selling was concentrated in large-cap technology and financials.
  • Six mainboard IPOs open on a single day — Rentomojo, Karamtara Engineering, LCC Projects, Manipal Payment & Identity Solutions, Steamhouse India and Asset Reconstruction Company (India) all opened for subscription, taking the count to fourteen books open at once — reported as the first time six mainboard issues have opened on one day in around thirty years.
  • Bond yield firms; Wall Street's last close — The Indian 10-year benchmark yield rose to 6.954%. Wall Street's last completed session was Tuesday 8 September, when the Dow fell 1.18%, the S&P 500 0.58% and the Nasdaq Composite 0.32%; the 9 September US session had not closed at the time of writing.

What we are watching next session

  • Brent above $100 for a second session. Every further dollar feeds the import bill, the rupee and the CPI print due on 14 September — it is now the input that matters most to how the RBI is read.
  • Whether the rupee holds after breaking 95. The RBI was seen selling dollars and running swaps; how much of that support persists is the question for exporters and importers alike.
  • Whether foreign selling keeps accelerating. FIIs went from a net ₹123 crore of sales on 8 September to ₹582.99 crore, while DII buying rose to ₹1,509 crore. The gap, and whether gross turnover stays elevated, is what to track through the week.
  • How fourteen concurrent books clear. Kanohar, Glass Wall and Prasol close on 10 September and six more on 11 September — subscription, and in particular QIB participation across that cohort, is the cleanest available read on primary-market depth.
  • US CPI on 11 September and India's CPI and WPI on 14 September — the first hard data on whether a $100 crude has begun to show up in prices.
