Corporate & macro desk

What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing

  • Crude sets the session for a second day — Brent rose 1.23% to $100.38 a barrel, a third consecutive advance, after Houthi forces were reported to have targeted several Saudi Aramco facilities. For an economy that imports the overwhelming majority of its crude, that remains the most consequential price on the screen.
  • Rupee has its worst day in eight weeks — The rupee closed at 94.83 per dollar, 34 paise weaker than Monday's 94.49 — its sharpest single-day decline since 14 July — as elevated oil met an absence of supportive foreign inflows.
  • Financials did all the damage — Nifty Financial Services fell 0.93% and private banks around 1%, with ICICI Bank down 1.97%, Axis Bank 1.67% and SBI Life 2.04%. The Bank Nifty closed at 56,777.55, down 310.75 points.
  • Defensives and defence held the line — Nifty Pharma rose 0.77%, FMCG 0.35% and energy 0.32%, while the defence index gained 2.52%. BEL was the best Nifty performer at +1.62%, ahead of Hindustan Unilever and ONGC.
  • The broader market ignored the benchmark — The Midcap 100 closed 0.21% higher and the Smallcap 100 0.17% higher, with advances and declines running close to even. The fall was a large-cap financials event, not a market-wide one.
  • Qualiance closes at 458.80x — The NSE SME issue finished 458.80 times subscribed — NII 699.46x, retail 446.35x, QIB 299.60x — after 13.78x on day one and 91.14x on day two. Glass Wall Systems was fully booked within two and a half hours of opening; Kanohar Electricals ended day one at 2.71x with QIB participation at just 0.04x.
  • FII/DII flows not published at press time — Provisional cash-segment figures for the session had not been released by the exchanges or any mirror by 8:00 PM IST, so no flow numbers are carried in this edition. Monday's data showed FIIs and DIIs both mild net buyers.
  • Wall Street reopens — US markets returned on Tuesday after the Labor Day holiday and were still trading at the time of writing. The last completed session remains Friday 04 September, when the Dow fell 0.51%, the S&P 500 0.38% and the Nasdaq 0.29% after a stronger-than-expected August jobs report.

What we are watching next session

  • Brent through $100. The third straight advance took it there on supply-disruption headlines; every further dollar feeds the import bill, the rupee and the inflation print due on 14 September.
  • Whether the rupee stabilises after its worst session since 14 July. At 94.83 the currency is doing the adjusting that the equity market has so far avoided.
  • Provisional FII/DII cash flows for 08 September, which had not published by 8:00 PM IST. Monday showed both sides mild net buyers; whether that survived a 555-point Sensex fall is the single most useful number outstanding.
  • How the three mainboard books close on Thursday. Kanohar, Glass Wall and Prasol all opened with QIB participation near zero — where institutions land by the final session is the real read on primary appetite.
  • Natco Pharma's fund-raising item on Wednesday and Ajmera Realty's NCD resolution on Thursday, and how specifically each frames the use of proceeds.
