Market Pulse — 07 September 2026

Sensex closed at 76,132.81 and the Nifty at 23,779.15, both down 0.50%, as Nifty IT fell 2.28% on firmer US rate expectations and crude near $97. Pharma was the only sector to close higher; small- and micro-caps held their ground and both FIIs and DIIs were mild net buyers.

Corporate & macro desk

What moved the tape and what the IR desks were announcing

  • Crude is the swing factor — Brent held near $97 a barrel and WTI above $92 on escalating US-Iran tension around the Strait of Hormuz. For an economy importing over 85% of its crude, that is the most consequential number on the screen.
  • US jobs print resets the rate path — A stronger-than-expected American labour report pushed expectations back towards tightening, lifting US yields and pressuring rate-sensitive Indian sectors — technology first among them.
  • Wall Street shut for Labor Day — US markets were closed on Monday. Friday's session had already ended lower across the board — Dow −0.51%, S&P 500 −0.38%, Nasdaq −0.29% — after the strong jobs report, so Indian equities opened without a fresh overnight cue and traded off Friday's tone.
  • Volatility bid, modestly — India VIX rose 5.61% to 11.28. Higher, but from a low base — the market paid up for protection without repricing risk outright.
  • Purple Style lists at a discount — Purple Style shares debuted at a 7% discount to the IPO price — a reminder that primary-market appetite is now discriminating rather than indiscriminate.
  • Broader market held — While the Nifty 50 fell 0.50%, the Smallcap 100 closed flat and the Microcap 250 rose 0.42% — the selling was concentrated in large-cap IT and insurance, not broad-based.
  • Rupee softer, bullion eases — The rupee fell 7 paise to close at 94.50 as crude offset strong FCNR inflows. 24K gold eased ₹650 to ₹1,54,150 per 10g; silver held at ₹2,50,000 per kg.
  • Primary market splits three ways — Three issues are taking bids. Qualiance International (NSE SME) is 91.14x subscribed, Pranav Constructions 6.03x, and Apana Logistics just 0.21x with no anchor book — on the same evening Purple Style listed at a 7% discount. Appetite has not gone; it has become selective, and the SME segment is being sorted rather than bid indiscriminately.

What we are watching next session

  • Brent above $95 — the level at which the import-bill and inflation arithmetic starts to bite, and the biggest single input into how the RBI is read from here.
  • Whether Apana Logistics gets across the line by Wednesday — 0.21x subscribed with no anchor investor, against Qualiance at 91x, is the clearest read yet on how sharply SME appetite is now differentiating.
  • Fund-raising resolutions from Raymond and Knowledge Marine on Tuesday, Natco Pharma on Wednesday — and how specifically each frames use of proceeds.
  • Whether the balanced flow picture holds. Both FIIs (+Rs 280 crore) and DIIs (+Rs 567 crore) were mild net buyers today despite the index falling; a break in that pattern matters more than the index level.
  • China inflation on 9 September and India's M3 print — both feed the commodity and liquidity narrative into next week.
